Devil's Lake Annual Retreat
The Basic Training Academy believes in mental health as strongly as physical health. To that end, the Basic Training Academy offers an annual Devil's Lake Retreat. Devil's Lake is a state park located in Baraboo Wisconsin, about 2 hours by car from Lake County IL.
Devil's Lake was formed during the last ice age when glaciers cut out the terrain to form the lake and several of the formations in and around the state park. The state park offers:
- Scuba Diving
- Trail Hiking
- Picnic Areas
- Rock Climbing
Of particular interest to us is the rock climbing and trail hiking. Typically, we will caravan up to Devils Lake on a Saturday morning leaving around 6:00am. We will usually arrive between 8:00am and 9:00am. Upon arrival, we set up camp at one of the picnic areas near the base of the rock face.
Next, we prepare, cook, and serve breakfast before we head out for the day's activities. We began by climbing up the rock face (boulders) to reach the top and join the trail that will take us to the south entrance to the state park. Once there, we will rest for about 30 minutes and then hike back. Upon our return to base camp, lunch is prepared and enjoyed by all. After lunch, we clean up, pack up, and return to Lake County. We usually arrive back between 5:00pm – 6:00pm.
The Devil's Lake Retreat is open to all members and non-members. This is a great time to invite a friend and/ or bring family members to enjoy this great outdoor event.
There is typically an entrance fee of about $15 for your car. Picnic and trail access fee is $4.00 (to be paid to the State Park) and a flat fee of $30.00 per person to cover the cost of the food and drink( to be paid to BTA in advance). Transportation costs are the responsibility of each individual but most people car pool to share the expense of getting there.
